Timeline of events:

Thursday: Joseph & Mary billboard goes up, smeared with paint within 5 hours as per previous post.

Friday: Joseph & Mary billboard put up again.

Saturday: Second billboard slashed by "knife-wielding Christian fanatic". St Matthew's announces that they will not replace Joseph & Mary billboard and will put up something less controversial. The archdeacon of the church, lone voice of sanity, has this to say:

"When knives are wielded in the name of God I have two responses. One is to act to ensure the safety of the public and parishioners. We will therefore not be replacing the vandalised billboard with an identical one.

"My second response is one of deep sadness at those in the Christian Church who don't want to offend any faith position, even the most literalistic view of a male god. By having unity as their priority they inadvertently feed fanaticism."

You can still see the Joseph & Mary slogan up top, but the remainder of the picture is gone, leaving the previous GLBTQ one visible beneath.

Sunday: A group of protesters see fit to make comment on the issue, despite the fact that there is no longer an issue.

I guess the good thing about this is that now St Matthews has gotten a lot more publicity, not just locally but as I understand around various global news points, which hopefully will give them some respect and benefit of recognition as well as your run of the mill vitriol. As far as billboard advertising goes, it's pretty much done the job.

It's that time of year again! I was semi-hoping to squeeze out another weekend vid before I go on holiday, but it turns out that I'll have to be in the office all weekend instead, so... yeah. Time for the 2009 vid round-up.

Pass it on, guys. I love seeing everybody's year end round-up.

I live across the street from a progressive church with very cool billboard advertising that they change every month or so. I kept meaning to post pictures, but haven't gotten around to it. Today's an auspicious day to start as their latest billboard stirs controversy and gets defaced 5 hours after it's put up.

I regret not taking a picture of the previous billboard, which advertises St Matthew's GLBTQ service and has a picture of Noah's ark against a rainbow, and lots of animals in twos, and the slogan "welcoming two of every kind". The logical o_O re the purpose of having two of each animal on the arc notwithstanding, it was really sweet and lovely.

More on St Matthew's here.

ETA: We just had a piece on the evening news where the Archdeacon showed a sketch of an alternative Christmas billboard which was ruled out for fear of being too racy. It showed a glowing neon sperm coming down from on high with the slogan "Joy to the world".

I LOVE THIS CHURCH. ♥

Lookie here, it's the post whore! (Think I've posted more in the last week than I did the past... year or something.)

Ghetto poll: anyone interested in a um, Nicky's "best of" vids DVD? If so, what vids do you want to see on it?

Brad brought this up when I was moaning about how I can't sit through watching my own vids because some of them bore me to tears. If I can't love my own children, I wouldn't expect anyone else to, let alone 4 years' worth of 'em. (Yeah, that metaphor ran away from me a bit.) Would anyone be interested in seeing a DVD of my, dunno, say 15 most... um, "popular"? "watchable"? vids? Call it a primer, if you will.

No paid account, hence ghetto poll. :P Leave a comment if you're interested and/or have any vid that you particularly want to see on the DVD.

Tentative playlist )

Regardless of whether this goes ahead, I will be putting out a 2009 DVD in early 2010, so this isn't the only chance to get 2009 vids on DVD.

Let's face it, this might just become a daily thing. Better defriend me now.

If cryogenics became a real, affordable option (i.e., if you could freeze your body until aging and illnesses were better understood), would you consider it? If so, do you fear you'd miss out on the wisdom that comes with growing old and dying?

Obviously the real/affordable assumptions factor highly. Thoughts:

- if there's even a possibility that I could wake up gazillions of years later and have good experiences and/or live forever, why the hell not? I wouldn't remember the passage of time and it's not like I'll be sitting around twiddling my thumbs until (if) I wake up.

- Big question is when do I freeze myself? Clearly I'm not willing to freeze myself now, i.e. essentially kill myself now in order for a possibility of living longer/better later. I'd only want to do it when I'm so old or sick that I have no more enjoyment of life. But would that then defeat the purpose? Maybe they can cure the sickness, but if I'm just terribly old, maybe I'll just wake up old and have to totter around in the future, being old. Hmm.

- I have grave doubts about people in the future actually wanting/bothering to defrost people from the past, even if they can. If cryo became so real and so affordable, I'm sure I'm not the only person who would consider it. Why would you willingly share your resources with hundreds of thousands of people who should have died ages ago?

- The truly old people I know who are on death's door don't seem wise. They've reverted to incoherent childlike states and, in their moments of lucidity, absolutely terrified about dying. It's hard to see wisdom there; just fear.

Thoughts?
